Feline effigy trumpet, Toltec culture, El Chanal, Colima State, Mexico, CE 1000-1400. Made of buff earthenware with deep red slip and with a burnished surface. In very fine condition with ample mineral and soil deposits, overall. This is a unique and scarce ceramic example of a Toltec period, West Mexican object representing the image of a feline head with open, toothy mouth and a spiraling shell body. The ceramic has a tubular mouthpiece at the back and allows for a blast of air to create a sound similar to a conch shell trumpet, which, no doubt, this feline effigy trumpet makes reference to. A superb example!
